For this assignment, you are asked to write a personal narrative highlighting a positive or negative significant experience you’ve encountered in your life.
There is no outside research required for this paper, so you shouldn’t need a works cited page.
Here are the general parts/elements of a summary that should be apparent in your essay:
- Introduction that includes an attention-grabber and gives a general idea of where your narrative will be headed
- Focus on a significant experience
- Properly/effectively organized recollection of the action in the story
- Use of details/quotes to highlight key moments
- Reflection or analysis of the key narrative events
- Logical organization
- Effective transitions
- Conclusion
- Use of first-person voice and past tense
Keep in mind that your audience is college-educated adults, so your story should not just simply recount an event, but there should also be some sort of reflection on a larger theme (the importance of personal responsibility, the adaptability of people to difficult situations, yada yada yada…) that will help imbue the narrative part of your essay with some meaning. We’ll read some examples out of the yellow book that will help show you how to do this.
Your essay will be evaluated on how well you convey the narrative and how well you incorporate the reflective parts of the essay.
